Suggestion of Essential Clothing & Equipment
1. Backpack (55 – 65 L) with sturdy straps and supporting frame. Quechua Forclaz 60 is a good choice.
2. Daypack (20-25 L) –optional. Useful for summit/pass day, handy if you want to offload your backpack on the trek.
3. Trekking shoes – Sports shoes are an absolute NO in trekking. You need Traction on Snow and Sport Shoes with PVC soles hardly justifies the choice. Ensure the shoes are well used before the trek. Forclaz 500 and Woodland are good choices.
Note: You can buy Decathlon products from online retailers like Playgroundonline. Ladies with smaller feet size find it a problem to get a shoe. Forclaz 500 has special trekking shoes for women.
4. 3 pair of track pants (at least one should be synthetic quick-dry kind). Or 3 pair of cotton pants with lots of pockets. Track pants are light and we highly recommend them. Plus when things get really cold then layers of clothes matter.
5. 3 cotton t-shirt with collar. Avoid bright colours like red and fluorescents. Stick to lighter tones. There are plenty of Birds and Animals one would come across while trekking and you won’t want them to get scared with your dressing sense.
6. One full Sleeve Sweater. A fleece jacket would be an alternative.
7. A full sleeve thick Jacket.
8. 4 pairs of Undergarments.
9. 1 pair of Thermal Inners.
10. 4-5 pair of Sports Socks.
11. Woolen Monkey cap/Balaclava that cover the ear.

13. Hand Gloves (water proof).
14. Sun glasses – Buy the one which will cover your eyes well. Choose from Black, Green, Brown and Blue coloured Sunglass — they cannot block UV rays. Avoid multi toned ones too. Sunglasses prevent snow blindness, and are mandatory for treks.
15. Sun Cap and/or Head-Scarf.
16. Trekking Pole is mandatory. You can buy a trekking pole online from Playgroundonline or from Rediff
17. People who wear spectacles should have any one of these:
Contact Lens.
Photo chromatic Glass.
If either of the above is not possible, wear your spectacles and carry a big sunglass that can be worn over your spectacles.
18. Light towel (a quick drying kind).
19. Chap stick or Lip Balm.
20. Cold Cream and Sun Screen Lotion (SPF 40+).
21. 2 Water bottles (1 L each). Do not carry packaged water bottles.

History
The revered shrine of Gangotri is situated at an altitude of 3,200 mts.above sea-level between a narrow glacial valley covered by a Pine and Cider forest! The place of worship ‘Gangotri’ is one most important thing for a devout Hindu, So important is the sacred river ‘Ganga’Visited by thousands of pilgrim every year, the 18th century Gangotri temple constructed by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa , is located near the spot where the goddess Ganga is said to have first descended on earth from heaven, as an answer to the prayers of King Bhagriath! Lord Shiva received Ganga in his locks to break the great force of her fall, and gently uncurled a tassel of his hair thereby freeing her! From there the Ganga emerged into many streams and the one which started from Gangotri was called Bhagirathi. It’s said that ‘Pandavas’ came here to perform the great ‘Deva Yajna’ to expiate karma for the death of their kinsmen in the epic battle of Mahabharat. The temple is situated on the bank of the Bhagirathi. Gangotri Glacier is the true source of the sacred river ‘Ganga’. A place to discover the natural beauty which are rare to find elsewhere. Along with the thrill of exploring nature the outside world one might well discover one’s own inner self in this magical land of spirituality. Submerged in the river is the natural rock Shivalinga where Lord Shiva is believed to have received ‘Ganga’ and is known as ‘The JalamagnaShivalinga (underwater Shivlinga) visible only in the in the winter months when the water level recedes, revealing the Shivlinga. ‘Gangotri’ is around 300 years old, and renovated in the 20th century , consists of a 20-feet high white Granite structure. During the winter months, the statue is taken to Ukhimath village where it is worshipped and is only replaced the following summer months. Gaumukh Glacier- Although, Gangotri is a destination by itself, it also acts as a stopover for the famed ‘Gaumukh’ glacier located at an altitude of 4200 m above sea level. The glacier is the geographical origin of the Ganges located at a distance of 18 km from Gangotri, following a steady uphill track. Here Ganga is known as ‘Bhagirathi’. A dip in its icy waters is almost a must for pilgrims; and to the temple of Bhairavanth at Bhaironghati, (10 km.). GMVN Tourist Bungalow is located at Bhojbasa, about 14 km., from Gangotrli, on the road to Uttarkashi, at the confluence of the Jat Ganga and Bhagirathi river.Pilgrlims also trek to Nandanvan (6km) andKedartal (18km) from Gangotri. From Gangotri is Cheedvasa at a distance of 28 kms. Bhojvasa, is at a distance of 22 km, both are an ideal camping site. Nandanvan is a 6 kms trekking route along the glacier and gives a spectacular glimpse of the Shivalinga. Across the Gangotri glacier is the Sylvan Tapovan, which is known for its greenness encircling the base of the Shivalinga peak. From here, one can go to Vasuki Tal, Kalindikhal, at a height of 5590 m to reach Badrinath.
